Art director whose record sleeves for Factory Records connected music, image-making, and a wider culture of design.

Peter Saville’s work for Factory Records made the record sleeve a place for cultural discovery. The Design Museum traces his practice across music, fashion, and art, including work associated with Joy Division and New Order. These are objects in which an image can establish a world before the listener hears a note.

We read that relationship as a form of invitation. Packaging does not have to explain the sound literally. It can create distance, atmosphere, or a question that the music will complicate. An unfamiliar visual language can become part of the experience of finding a record.

For designers, the productive question is how much to explain. Give everything away and an image may lose its tension; withhold everything and the audience may have no way in. Saville’s work offers a starting point for examining the balance between cultural reference, clarity, and curiosity.
