The designer behind I ♥ NY, whose work made emotional connection a central part of visual identity.

Visual identityGraphic designSymbol design

Milton Glaser’s I ♥ NY joins letters and a picture in a single readable phrase. MoMA holds a 1976 presentation board for the project, placing the design in the context of New York’s difficult financial and civic circumstances. The mark belongs to a tourism campaign, but its visual construction invites a much more personal reading.

Our reading of Glaser’s achievement begins with participation. The viewer supplies the word “love” and completes the sentence. A symbol becomes an action in the mind, rather than a piece of decoration attached to a name.

The useful lesson is not to add a heart to another identity. It is to ask what a person can recognise, complete, and remember. The strongest visual shorthand gives people something small enough to carry and open enough to make their own.
